Joseph S. Alpert, MD

A Yale University and Harvard Medical School graduate, Dr. Alpert completed his postgraduate medical training at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, now Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His career has included leadership roles at the University of California San Diego, the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, and the University of Arizona.
Dr. Alpert served as chair of the University of Arizona Department of Medicine from 1992 to 2006 and is Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Medicine. His work spans cardiovascular medicine, clinical research, medical education, and scholarly publishing.
Oleh Haluszka, MD

Dr. Haluszka is a professor of medicine and gastroenterologist whose clinical and research interests include advanced endoscopy, pancreatic and biliary disease, and small-bowel disorders.

Dr. Haluszka moved to Arizona in 2016 as professor of medicine and chief of gastroenterology at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System. In 2019, he became associate clinical chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine.
His earlier leadership roles included gastroenterology chief at Temple University Health System and gastrointestinal endoscopy director at Fox Chase Cancer Center. He also served at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego and continued in the U.S. Naval Reserve through 2005.
Steve Goldschmid

Dr. Goldschmid is a gastroenterologist and longtime academic medical leader whose career includes senior roles at Emory University and the University of Arizona.

After beginning his academic career at the University of South Florida, Dr. Goldschmid was recruited to Emory University and later to the University of Arizona, where he helped rejuvenate the gastroenterology program and oversaw development of a new GI laboratory.
He became chair of the Department of Medicine in 2006 and dean of the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 2008. He currently consults for the Arizona Medical Board and volunteers with the Southern Arizona Community Food Bank.
Marvin J. Slepian, MD, JD

Dr. Slepian is a Regents’ Professor at the University of Arizona, a cardiologist, inventor, and director of the Arizona Center for Accelerated Biomedical Innovation.

His academic appointments span medicine, medical imaging, surgery, biomedical engineering, materials science, chemical and environmental engineering, management, and law. His research focuses on biomaterials, tissue engineering, drug delivery, cardiovascular devices, and artificial intelligence.
Dr. Slepian has authored or co-authored more than 300 publications and is associated with more than 120 issued and filed patents. His translational work has helped advance numerous cardiovascular technologies, including total artificial heart systems.
